Quora’s AI chatbot platform, Poe, has recently unraveled a new economic avenue for bot creators by monetizing their efforts, marking a significant milestone in the arena of the creator economy. Traditionally, the term "creator" resonates with individuals crafting content for platforms like TikTok, YouTube, or Instagram. However, Poe is shifting this narrative by financially rewarding bot creators, including those who generate “prompt bots” on Poe, as well as server bots created by developers who integrate their bots with the Poe AI.
The program, which was inaugurated last week, pioneers a fresh paradigm by monetarily appreciating the endeavors of those building AI bots. Initially, there are two pathways for bot creators to earn revenue. One avenue entails a revenue-sharing model where if a bot leads a user to subscribe to Poe, a portion of the revenue is shared with the bot’s creator instantly. The other forthcoming method will allow bot creators to set a per-message fee, which Quora will remunerate for every message.
Quora first introduced its chatbot app Poe to the masses in February, which was designed as a hub for users to interact with a spectrum of AI chatbots from different entities including OpenAI, Amazon, and Google-backed Anthropic. The overarching vision was not only to provide a playground for users to dabble with new AI technologies but also to enhance Quora’s Q&A site by integrating high-quality content from Poe, whenever it meets the requisite quality standards.
With a burgeoning AI chatbot market, Poe has been gaining traction as indicated by the 253,530 downloads it garnered in its maiden month post-launch. As of October, it has witnessed over 18.4 million installs, with nearly 1.22 million monthly active users. Although the in-app purchase revenue is still below the quarter-million mark per month, the figures might not present the full picture since many users might opt for its subscription via the web at $19.99/month or $199.99/year.
The creator monetization program is currently confined to U.S. users, offering up to $20 per user who subscribes to Poe via a creator’s bots. The metrics for this remuneration encompass various scenarios including new user subscriptions instigated by a creator, returning users who subscribe, or users interacting with a bot’s paywall just before subscribing.
Adam D’Angelo, Quora CEO, envisions a vibrant market across diverse domains like tutoring, therapy, entertainment, analysis, storytelling, and media generation, to name a few. He asserts that this initiative is the dawn of a new market with ample opportunities for creators to provide valuable services globally while earning revenue simultaneously.
Quora's foray into monetizing AI bot creation through Poe is a glimpse of how the creator economy is evolving with AI technology, offering a lucrative incentive for creators to innovate and contribute to the expanding AI chatbot ecosystem.
